Most parents can experience a time when they're torn between wanting their children to remain a baby forever but also wondering when they will be independent enough to do things on their own. It’s a tough thing for a parent to manage in some cases, in particular, mothers tend to take on a greater role of responsibility for children. When taking on this responsibility, that can often fail to shift from doing everything to expecting more of the children kids independence can get lost. Having someone in their life that does everything for them can stunt emotional growth and slows independence skills for that child.

I have a friend that is sending her son to summer camp. However there is a bit of a resistance on his behalf because he cannot take his iPad with him. Although she has reassured him that there won't even be anytime for an iPad he still can't imagine life without it. He not only uses an iPad at school during various parts of the day, he also has one at home for both learning games and "fun games".
Kids are very connected in today's society. Many parents say their kids know more about their iPhones, iPads and computers then they do. It's not uncommon to see kids out in stores or restaurants with smartphones or tablets.
Camp provides children with a great group of caring adults, who are there specifically to nurture this unique educational experience. This is one of the reasons why attending camp is so beneficial for many children.
When you look at the educational base of a camp experience, you can see so many opportunities to thrive — self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership, and self-respect — build personal competencies. All are vital to a well-rounded adult.
Let’s face it. Being in middle school is tough. You're in that in-between stage of not really being a little kid and not really being a big kid either. Tons of stuff is happening to your body, you're not really sure who you are and what you want to be. It’s a lot of “stuff” that happens in a short amount of time.
This is why summer camp is a great option!
You’ll get to be who you want to be
When you walk into camp, most likely no one will know who you really are. You won’t be attending with kids you’ve know since Kindergarten so who you are is a mystery to them. This doesn’t mean that you have a license to have bad behavior or act inappropriately, but it does mean you have a chance to be brave, be new and be anything you want to be.
Looking for a great summer job? Love working with kids?
Then being a camp counselor might be a great fit for you!
There are many great reasons to be a camp counselor. If you love kids, then you know working with them is rewarding, and spending the summer outside having fun with them is a dream come true for some!
Even if you are not a foodie, there are just some foods that are associated with summer camp. They might not always be the most healthy choice but there honestly is nothing like some thing cooked over an open fire.
Campfire Orange Cakes and Campfire Orange Cinnamon Rolls
These are a little gem! First you will need to cut off the top of an orange and scoop out the fruit. You are left with a small bowl made out of the rind. Next fill it just over half way with cake batter. Then set it in the campfire coals and bake for about 20 minutes.
If you're reading this, then congrats! Your child has reached a special time in their development when they are ready to branch out on their own a little bit, be more independent and of course venture out to explore their first summer camp experience!
Reaching this milestone is indeed a big step! You may be asking yourself a few questions:
- Where do you go from here?
- How can you find the right camp?
- What if my child hates the summer camp experience?
- Are they really old enough to attend summer camp without me? Continue reading
